Did you buy an SUV sized stroller? I hope it was a nice BOB or something and not one of those travel systems. (Pointless, I tell you!)

:)

Kristen, the only things I've bought are three pairs of little Pooh socks and two little yellow Pooh onesies. I go to look at things and I am completely overwhelmed by everything there is to buy. I don't have that much stuff, my house is too little for all that stuff, and I can't imagine that such a little person would need all of that stuff.

Elisa, yes. It's true.

Kristen!! I just looked at those strollers on line and there' like $400! I'll carry that baby for $400! (I'm carrying her/him now for free!)
Is this what I'm in for?

Welcome to the world of baby crap.

You don't need a stroller for the first four to six months at least. Here's what you really need (according to me.)

- car seat
- a bassinet (we used the pack and play)
- a sling (maya lightly padded is a good start)
- a miracle blanket (google, trust me)

Lots of people get EVERYTHING, I tried to minimize. No exersaucer, but I did get a doorway jumper. The bumbo was pretty useful. Etc. Those registry guides are ridiculous.

Also, you will know better after the baby comes what they will like and use. For example, Kate used the swing but didn't need it. Lexi had pretty severe reflux and used it a lot more, because it kept her upright and in motion. I know other babies who HATED the swing. For the first 3 or 4 weeks, most babies sleep and don't need anything (except a miracle blanket!) and you can figure out what sorts of things would actually be useful to your baby at this stage.

That's really helpful. I have been looking at baby hawk baby carriers, too. I want something sling-y definitely.

Baby Hawks are great, but Mei Tais are the finickiest carriers as far as what people find comfortable. We do have a wide variety in the magic city slingers lending library (including baby hawk!) for people to try and borrow to make sure it works for them before they buy.

I recommend a ring sling for newborns because they are the most versatile, and at their weight, you don't need to distribute the weight over both shoulders. But I do ultimately recommend everyone have a good one shouldered and a good two shouldered carrier. Come play at Magic City Slingers sometime, we usually have a pregnant mom or two in the crowd :)

Oh, I like that Maya wrap.

We do have a creepy doll to try with, but the best test of a Mei Tai would be to put 25 lb. Lexi on your back. You will know quickly if it is comfy or not! (And I wore Kate on my back to 37 weeks, so it's safe...) Some people like padded, 4" straps (like the baby hawk), others like wider, unpadded ones. Babies have preferences, too, mine like their arms out and would never tolerate a tall mei tai like a toddler hawk. Mei Tais and pouches (for sizing) are two things I think are very hard to get right the first time buying without trying. Ring slings do have different shoulders, but that Maya Lightly Padded works for everyone, in my experience. And, it's not so fancy you will cry if it gets spit up on it, etc. It's a workhorse.
